Im definitely new school. I know the old racers didnt do it, but it works for me.

Around here I notice 2 types of extremes:
People who ride their sportbike like a dirtbike, keeping their upper body pointing straight up, crossed up over the bike, and their inside albow is almost locked becuase they're using it to push the bike down to the point where it's dragging hard parts even though they're not going very fast. Then there are people at the other extreme who shift 100% of their butt off unlike the 50% they're supposed to, just so they can drag an elbow for the photographer. Then they wonder why the bike gets upset and almost highsides when they roll on the throttle at the same time that they try and pull themselves back up onto the seat.

Something else to consider that plays a major role in the successful use of the new method, it ALL depends on what body type you are. If you are short and stubby, you will find it more dificult to practice the body off style. Rangy and leggy, its much easier. Heavier people and lighter people also have to adjust for their body types.

Yeah with being a little on the shorter side I've had it to where my left foot came off the peg going through a right hander. I had an "oh shit" moment at that point, but gained my composure and got it back to wear I needed to be.

 I had a few of those yesterday. Buddy thought I was showboating when I put my outside leg up in the air. I was pressing so hard on the outside peg my foot flew off!

Sometimes I feel like my foot's going to come off. Scary!

I'm glad I'm not the only one to have done this.
