I'm not trying to be a bitch about this but she bought it off "EBay Motors" using the "buy it now" option or so she thought. It was pretty slick, he had listed on Craig's List but once she inquired, he sent her a message with the Photo Bucket link. She inquired again and he sent her the "EBay Motors" link. I wish I had it, it was perfect, complete with his 100%/75 Ebay rating with actual customer ratings you could click on. It totally navigated just like EBay. He also has a Twitter Page, a phone number (voice mail answers), AOL address, you do a reverse look up on the number and an address comes up with his name. I'm telling you, I think that she was stupid and naive (she did just turn 21 a couple months ago) but I have to admit that it was a very good scam! To be honest, if these crooks upped the price by a $1,000 they'd probably get more hits. I was honestly put off by the price and the fact that it was a Craig's List ad but once she texted me that it was on EBay I felt 100% better in all honesty. Of course, she didn't mention the wire transfer payment to me at that time. Hey, as I said, at that point, I text her to do what she wants. I figure that Pay Pal/EBay would have her back. Oh well, live and learn I guess...:idk:

Cleary they did their homework on the whole gimmick.

Yea it's nuts, I'll get the links and post them once she gets her loot back. I don't want to "tip them off" so to speak. He even sent her messages after the sale, letting her know that the bike is on the way that afternoon... slick! Oh and he also had a VIN number and she had set up fucking insurance with State Farm that morning! ($40/month FC) I'm sure that he knows that people can recall wire transfers so he wants to keep them unworried...

Boy it sure sucks! She may be able to get her money back now since I called her that morning to tell her it was a scam. She literally was waiting for the bank to open to do the deal!!! She went back around 10 after class. If she had waited until after her first class to send it I would have caught her! Again live and learn! At least now we can go back to the Spring bike upgrade timetable...:rockwoot: I feel bad for her but it's kinda hard since she should get a check from G-pa tomorrow for a grand... SPOILED ROTTEN BRAT!!!

azoomm 10-07-2009 10:04 AM

I was always curious who was actually sending these people money to keep them running scams. I mean, if they didn't get anyone - they would go away, right?

Wire transfer should have tipped anyone off. Hopefully she gets her money back... it's an expensive lesson. Didn't State Farm run the VIN?

shmike 10-07-2009 10:09 AM

I hope the bike arrives at her door.

If I had known about the wire transfer, I would have freaked out but I didn't until after the deed was done. You guys have to remember that she doesn't live with me and I'm not her Daddy. We go days at a time without seeing each other.

I don't know, if it's a legitimate vin then State Farm will write a policy, right? I could go to the dealer and write down a vin and put insurance on every bike there if I wanted. Heck, I could call Allstate right now and put insurance on your bike if I have the vin....:idk:

No chance of that! EBay emailed her that they have found the site and broken the link to EBay. Even after the "sale", when she clicked the link, it took her to the actual Ebay Motors site...slick! Shit, she got an "email confirmation" from the shipper that the bike is en route and would be here tomorrow between 12 and 4 pm...slick! Again, she was stupid and I should have looked at the deal harder for and asked more questions/got more involved her but....:idk: We've been dating for a few months and her dealings are really none of my business imho...:idk:

Dude, she's a grown up - it's not your "fault" and it shouldn't be your job to tell her how to spend her money.

I just never knew someone that fell for it, that's all. :idk: I mean, who wires money to someone for something sight unseen without actual proof that said object exists? Paypal would even be a stretch for a big dollar object - but, a direct wire transfer?? I shouldn't be in shock - people must do it all the time or there wouldn't be scammers out there continuing to do it.

Yea it's amazing! I guess it's an extension of our current society in a way. I send "money" to companies weekly for products "sight unseen" and hope that they are legit... NOT $4,000 though!!! I think the problem here is mostly inexperience, to be honest, I've never sent a wire transfer so I don't know exactly how it works as far as if there were any "safeguards"/charge backs. At least not until now anyway... I've never had the need to use them and I have always heard that it's a bad idea. I have to admit that I've sent checks to companies/persons for products back in the day, that can be just as dangerous I guess...:idk: It's a hard lesson that's for sure...

Can you do us a favor - start a new thread that is JUST about her experience... maybe we can educate the world about this bullshit. I think it's tragic and horrible. I think no one should go through it, ever.

Luck to her getting her money back. I'd love to know the whole story [once y'all are comfortable telling it], AND the outcome.

Gas Man 10-08-2009 11:40 AM

Hey I was just told last night that a friend of mine fell victum to another scam. Trying to buy tickets to a big college game. "Bought" them online via some avenue... western unioned $400 for them and poof! Can't file a police report because they were paying over face value and that is scalping. So its true. 2 negatives dont make a positive.

Trip 10-08-2009 12:46 PM

Yep, you can't trust anyone...

I'll start a new thread once I hear something concrete from the bank.

I'd be slightly less worried going through Paypal. They, at least, have some sort of safeguards if you don't recieve your shit.

I use PayPal and pay with my credit card. The credit card companies protection trumps PayPal and has got me a 100% refund, shipping included, on 2 sales. One for "A* gloves" that were vinyl chinese knock-offs and one for someone sending the wrong manual. The 954 service manual was nice, but not terribly helpful on my 929.

PayPal sided with the seller in both cases because they were able to show a tracking number. That's all PayPal cares about and they'll side with the seller most times. I wouldn't waste my time using PayPal's "protection" again (and suggest everyone do the same, don't send directly from your bank account on PayPal!)

Good info, thanks! :dthumb:

Dave 10-13-2009 12:04 PM

sorry to hear about the loss tiggs. My only regret from starting on a 600 was my dumbass sold it when i bought the 954. Semi sorta looking for another hurricane as a daily beater/project. Wish i hadnt sold mine

marko138 10-13-2009 12:58 PM

I got the wrong part from eBay once. Paid with PP. They refunded my money when the seller wouldn't give me the correct part. Took forever but I got my money back. Then sold that fucking part too. Double win.
