Bike and riding skills

That's pretty much what I want. I have the gear...just no bike or knowledge of how to ride one.

So...anyone selling a cheapo bike?! :)

Trip 12-14-2010 12:30 PM

Craigslist is your friend. With it winter and the holidays, you definitely have the upper hand right now.

tommymac 12-14-2010 03:57 PM

Tsunami 12-14-2010 06:17 PM

My Dr200 is for sale but I live on the other side of the country

the chi 12-15-2010 11:28 AM

Cruiser or SB?

Big fan of the newer Ninja 250 for smaller statured riders, my best friend is 5', and even lowered it was still just a tad tall, but definitely easier for her to handle than the older model 250. The rebels are decent as well if you prefer cruiser style. Both bikes are lighter and easier to learn to manuever, and pick up when you fall over (it happens to all of us. Both are easily sellable at lil or no loss when you are ready to move up. Buy used, but have someone knowledgeable check it out first so you dont get a lemon.

As far knowledge, run by the DMV, take the permit test, once you have permit and bike, have OSP walk you through the basics. Best thing I ever did was ride around in my neighborhood, practicing starts and stops, picking up speed, shifting, small turns, etc. Once you are comfortable there, then branch out and maybe hit a lil bit faster roads. Definitely hit the MSF, even if you are already familiar with the basics they will teach, you can always learn something helpful.

One major thing to remember, always look where you want to go. If you want to go left to miss the huge pine tree or fence in front of you but you are only looking at the tree or fence, guess where you're going.

Ninjakel 12-15-2010 11:35 AM

i;ve got a 750 for sale.

Trip 12-15-2010 12:25 PM

Get a little DR200 or klx250 or some other small dual sport. If you want to learn to ride well fast with minimal risk to hurting the bike, a dual sport is where it is at. You can learn all types of riding in many coniditions and be that much more able to handle a larger displacement bike of any type when you want to move up. Then you also don't have to worry about OSP messing it up when he sneaks out on your bike.

Plus, they are cheap and hold their cheap value.

Yeah but when she (or me :D) drops it in the driveway and cracks the plastics or something, all of a sudden the $1500 250 Ninja looks way cheaper...

the chi 12-21-2010 10:14 AM

 True.

4 Words : Reeeallly long frame sliders

OTB 12-21-2010 02:32 PM

Bike weighs 192 lbs.....

versus the Lil ninjas 340 lb (about the same as my DB4 Bimota...........)

Plastics are the older, stronger heavyweight ABS....not the thin crap on new bikes.....

Bike already has a few scrapes (nothing major, just the usual for a 9 yr old bike).

I'll put a set of delrin sliders on if you are serious....

That sounds awesome...Now I just gotta come up with the money...

HokieDNA01 12-21-2010 02:43 PM

The bike is a 50cc and will only do ~65mph? I dont know if that is a good all around starter bike. Is a mini track bike.

pauldun170 12-21-2010 02:49 PM

I gotta a ZX-11 in my garage doing nothing.
good lil beginner bike

Which reminds me..I gotta do something with that bike.

Trip 12-21-2010 03:32 PM

she will tire of it quickly. It's great to have available to you, but not to own.

Nope..not something I'd want to ride to Alaska on. But there are two issues:

Beginner...
Small stature....

In Europe, these and the Derbis are THE beginner bikes...for a reason....they go, stop and handle like REAL bikes and a competent rider on one can embarrass a mediocre rider on a larger bike.

I had this one out in October on the twisty backroads near the Potomac where top speeds seldom go above 70 and other riders were STUNNED it was a 50cc bike.......

On top of that you have 31 outdoor kart sprint (read road) courses in Florida...most of which host YSR and 49, 72 and 90cc racing. Not to mention the full size courses there...........

http://www.na-motorsports.com/Tracks...doorKartTracks

I have friends of mine in Pittsburg who had the same issues, till she started racing one two years ago at Beaver Run....now she puts other riders to shame on the road with her lowered 750 Monster.........

Wow... moving that around the garage would be nice... I could just pick it up and set it down!

Are 50cc motorcycles able to be tagged? I'm pretty sure 125s in TN are too small to be street legal. Maybe I'm wrong.

OTB 12-22-2010 09:55 AM

In Md at least, they are street legal but not freeway legal. Bike has title and can be tagged in MD, can't speak for FLA. Up to about 50 it'll outperform your average econobox.....

You don't need to tag a 50cc like this in TN. There are certain rules you have to follow, like lights and such and you are restricted to certain roads.

DLIT 12-22-2010 10:18 AM

I'll sell you a R1. CHEAP!

Lemme guess... all it needs is a fresh tank of gas and some air in the tires, right?

Wait... I don't think I remember there even being a tank on the bike in the last pic I saw!
