I wonder how much "cash" went with the ZR1 ?

Service anywhere: Chevy.

Nosebleed rarity: Bugatti.

You know what else is nosebleed rare? Pyramids. There aren't that many, not even when you count up the third-world wannabes in South America (even though their biggest is more massive than the Pyramid of Cheops). And Hope Diamonds. And Paris Hiltons.

You can't take any of those anywhere. They're too high-maintenance, too high-profile, too too that there's no way to have one without making a scene. What if you want crazy fast without having every slackjawed dropout pointing at you and your pet pelican saying, "Dude, that's a Lamborghini." Who needs it? You want video of Paris playing Bobbing for Knobs with your bookshelf in the background making its internet debut, or would you rather have a few happy years of circus sex with a deliciously flexible but visually anonymous Cirque du Soleil reject?

Homeslice 02-23-2010 05:37 PM

Good choice IMO...........the ZR1 undoubtedly handles better, and is probably just as quick. Looks better too IMO.

It definitely looks better imho. Probably does handle better but not sure about the quicker part.

Both are sick cars. I'd love to have a Vette...the one with the carbon roof.

smileyman 02-23-2010 05:41 PM

I'll pose another unthought of but plausible scenario. You outrun cops to your residence. Not saying you should but it can happen. Or someone in your neighborhood complains...Isnt it easier to use some plausible deniability and say ' well officer it wasny my corvette they saw', rather than 'well yes i do own a Veyron, but I've been home all day'

Advantage anonymity! Like my friend on the very visible LSU Tigers themed Busa, someone that sticks out usually gets to pay the ticket.

Very true and I had a lot of "fun" in my old 5.0 Vortech Supercharged Mustang several years back.

Vettes are a dime a dozen too...I know...but mine stands out a little which doesn't work in my favor when playing around...as you referenced.

The Bug is an overly hight-tech, finicky solution to a simple HP problem.

Americans have made cars just as fast, without ten radiators.

Yeah when I first heard the tech bits on that I couldn't believe ten freakin' radiators !! :whatwhat:

Watching the guy hit 253 mph in it on video was pretty cool though and so was the race against the British Jet both on "TopGear" I believe.

ETA: read the link contained in the main article about maintaining a Veyron. If you actually drive the car you are going to pay the equivalent of a ZR1 every couple of years in maintenance.

Most of what you see (the silver) is the top of the supercharger/intercooler assembly. There is plastic (blue and black) surrounding it to cover the plumbing and belts though.

I "think" my 78 that I bought in the late 80's had that with the T-Tops...can hardly remember. I know that there was a big problem with theft of the T-Tops and Targa roofs so maybe that was their reasoning ? I honestly don't know.

Uh, on a Ferrari the view is a lot more substantial than just seeing a square intercooler.

If Chevy really wanted to provide a good view, they would have given it a front-mount IC so that we could actually see the engine.

It has a roots type blower and an air to liquid intercooler. Mounting the intercooler up front would accomplish nothing and create some downsides.

ETA: With the F40 you see 2 square intercoolers and some intake runners and that is about it.

Would be cool if they did a "come see it" thing. I'd hop on my bike and go see that purty little thing.

But... then you'd be ABLE TO SEE THE ENGINE. Don't you understand? If you can SEE IT, then you can paint it mauve with tasteful chartreuse highlights! :bash:

Homeslice 04-20-2010 03:36 PM

What can I say, being able to see mechanical parts adds to the appeal. The fun of owning a car isn't simply about how fast it is.

unknownroad 04-20-2010 05:53 PM

Actually, i really enjoy looking at the mechanicals of a vehicle as well, but modern engines just don't lend themselves to it.

That's why i just don't get "car guys" who hate on the Veyron. Yes, it's far more complex (and expensive) than a consumer automobile has any right to be, but it manages to do some remarkable things, and as an engineering exercise it's absolutely fascinating.

Homeslice 04-20-2010 06:24 PM

Well "car guys" actually like to drive, and all accounts are that the Veyron is rather one-dimensional........In other words it's fast, but its heavy weight prevents it from being tossed around as much as a McLaren or something like that. Plus the front end styling leaves a lot to be desired IMO.

Also, it isn't hard to build an intake manifold that's nice to look at. Or tubular exhaust headers for that matter. Most Ferrari and Alfa Romeo engines look great.

The only reason most manufacturers don't bother making their engines look nice anymore is because they cover it with those stupid plastic shrouds.

There's more to driving than going fast on a track. It's not a track car :idk: That doesn't change the fact that it's world-record fast, crams an astonishing amount of hardware under an aerodynamic body, and almost every detail is crafted like a fine watch. I'd love to take one apart :rockwoot:

Of course. But wasn't the question "why do car guys criticize it?"

GT cars get criticized all the time, this isn't the first. Supras and 3000GT's were other examples.

And as far as the F1 being a track car, I have never heard anyone use such a classification. You can use an F1 on the street just fine. All street cars sold to consumers are just that: Street cars. Whether they perform well on the track doesn't make them a track car. It's just like bikes -- Manufacturers don't sell "track bikes"........They sell street bikes, and people take them and turn them into track bikes if they feel like it.
