Kindle Fire?

Anyone thinking about getting one? $200, I might be willing to check it out.

marko138 09-30-2011 02:24 PM

Nope.

Particle Man 09-30-2011 03:31 PM

Depends on the reviews.

Well of course... I honestly never heard of it before this thread... just saying it looks pretty cool...

LeeNetworX 09-30-2011 04:28 PM

Only if my employer buys me one.

derf 09-30-2011 04:33 PM

If I can use it as a travel computer/web browser, and I can get a small travel keyboard to go with it, and depending on the reviews maybe. I keep realizing I need to replace my 2006 17" laptop with something a little more travel friendly and newer.

Waiting for the real life reviews to hit to see. If not I am expecting to get a netbook this winter

nhgunnut 09-30-2011 04:53 PM

As somone who owns a Galaxy tab my to my chagrin the 7 inch screen is in my opinion to small

Netbooks are the shit. I have a nice Toshiba I got for about $280. I think it's cheaper now becuase whenever I buy something it prices drop 3 weeks later and go on sale the following week.

Looks interesting. If you can read a book in sunlight then I'd be interested. If it glares and crap then I'd have no interest in it.

derf 09-30-2011 06:07 PM

I need something to keep me entertained while I sit in a hotel room when I travel for work

The 10s look awkward though. The people with ipads look like they are having issues using them and end up almost resting them like laptops. Might as well get a similarly priced and sized laptop that is better and faster.

Galaxy tab 8.9 may be the way to go.

I have to agree, an 8 or 9 inch may be the way to go. My wife has the IPad it is a pain because of its size my G Tab is easy enough to carry but has poor screen space and is limited by Android 2.2 ( I do use the hell out of the Kindle Software with it though) I am waiting till after christmas then assessing what is out there.

Corey 10-04-2011 06:58 AM

I'm curious, but not very optimistic. Some of the specs seem down, though at 199, that's about expected. I kind of wonder how Amazon's overlay will screw with the device. 2.3 is disappointing. If your going to create a tablet, why wouldn't you use a tablet optimized OS? This looks like something that's going to have limited functionality unless you root it, and I'm at the end of having to dick around with shit to make it work right and hope the solutions aren't just half assed patches.

Apoc 10-04-2011 10:35 AM

I preordered one. I love my kindle, and have been hoping they would do something like this for a while. 3g Whispernet is awesome, and im interested in seeing the Fires capabilities.

This one is not 3G though, I am holding off for a 3G version. It would be killer to have the fire and free 3g.

It will be when I replace the network adapter from my kindle to the fire. They should be using the same ones, and the one out of the kindle is removable.

If it doesnt fit, oh well.

I shall. I know it worked when I replaced them from my 3g to my sisters WiFi only, before I sent mine in on a warantee exhange.

Saturday Night Live "Weekend Update" had a story on it. They expect sales to be high among parents who always buy the wrong gift.

I bought my GF one for Christmas a year ago. She travels a ton and loves to read so I thought it'd be perfect. It works better as a paper weight holding paper down than it does as a book.

Gas Man 10-05-2011 08:55 AM

Will it do porn?

Nothing, they sent me a new one, along with a shipping label to rturn the old one. If you dont return it within 30 days, they charge you for the second kindle.

The kindle is far better than a 'real book'. I would hardly call it the wrong present. If you enjoy reading, its fucking awesome. A library in your hands.

Dunno what kindle your kid got, as the screen is black and white 'e-ink' on all editions, and theres no games on them.

I downloaded a bunch of word and card games. Nothing spectacular, but they're better than minesweeper.

Anway, define better. I can carry a lot more on the Kindle, which is great for travel, but it will never replace actual paper for me.

Switch 10-05-2011 02:55 PM

Nope. I've got a TouchPad waiting for CM7. Just sold my nook color.

LeeNetworX 10-05-2011 03:33 PM

Alot of my co-workers are buying these with the keyboard/docking stations. Haven't heard anything but good things about them so far.

At that price, why not throw in an extra 100$ and get an Ipad?

My friend has the Transformer with Windows 7 on it instead of Android. It's not a bad little set up. The screen is nice and a decent size. The keyboard is convenient and the keys big enough to be useful without being micro-moronic like some of the keyboards on a similar sized netbook. It's a bit on the heavy side. The mouse is one of those eraser tip kind that's a complete son of a bitch to use. It's completely imprecise and no amount of adjustment makes it smooth enough to use for more than very basic stuff. The mouse buttons are retardedly small and butt right up to the space bar. I still hit the space bar far more than the actual mouse buttons when I use it. For 400 bucks, it's not a bad little deal, but I agree with Apoc. For a bit extra, I'd get the iPad. The fit and finish is better, the weight is lower, and Honeycomb is still clunky compared to iOS.
