Well, you just roll your bike on it and you then can move the wheel however you wish. Besides with some larger bikes, putting it on stands may not be entirely safe or easy by yourself. There are also those people who don't have stands...
I used to have one that I kept in my wash bucket and just grabbed the bucket when it was wash time. I guess they're not for everyone....
