It's all about the display size race. And if you want to capture the market and move product, you need a big HD screen. Big displays and thin housings sell phones; tried and true. As more people use their phones for browsing and video streaming, I don't see a change in direction coming anytime soon.

To Smitty, I definitely remember when the phones were getting REAL small. One of the last ones I worked was so small I could barely use the keypad, but it didn't launch in the US due to less than stellar GPS performance, and E911 requirement (one of the many rubs of phone design... you need physical volume for radiated performance).

Market demand drives design, not the other way around. When the mass market (not a few people on TWF) start picking phones with smaller displays and thicker housings, that's what will be available.
