I thought you had a fairly new Dakota- it doesn't already have a center high-mount brake light? I'd just run it off of that.
As for the dome light, I'd just stick a battery-powered LED light or two up there and call it a day. Lots of hacking and pulling wires, and then you have to remember to leave the door hanging open if you want to see in the back. Screwit.

I don't know about the Dakota but I know my Ram has a white light (surrounding the center brake light) that lights the bed. It is activated by its own button. Use that as your dome light switch. As for the "how-to" you are on your own.
