This is what is wrong with healthcare
http://www.philly.com/philly/health_...in_luxury.html
Cliff notes: Virtua hospital corp is building a luxury hospital in a rich neighborhood that has massage spas and shit. The hospitals are only located in well to do areas, not near areas where there are poor people without medical insurance. The company makes more profit than the industry average. They hope to maximize profits by charging more money and attracting more patients who are willing to pay higher healthcare costs to get worked on in a luxury environment. Quote:

Referring people without insurance to other hospitals for follow up care is wrong, and it sounds like they will be disciplined for it. Outside of that I really don't see a problem. That some people are willing to pay for and are receiving a high level of care does not lower the level of care others are receiving.

My son was born in the virtua in north jersey, and last year when i broke my hand I went to the virtua in Mt Holly, now I'm wondering if they sent me away with a broken hand because of my health insurance (they did call me back the next day to tell me its broken).

The rest of it sounds fine with me. I don't work in the industry but I don't understand why most hospitals wouldn't want to use Six Sigma. It is designed to increase efficiency and decrease waste and mistakes. Sounds like a plan to me. |

I don't know...if poor/non-insured people are "busing in" from outside the hospital's normal service area then I don't blame them for turning them away if the injury/illness is non-life threatening. That's like the hood-rats the drive across town to swim in the pool at my GF's $1,500/month apt complex. I suggest you hop on back on the bus and take your butts to Walmart and buy that Sponge Bob wading pool for $19.95...

also referring people to other hospitals is also kind of illegal if your hospital has the same services. |

I thought as long as it is not an emergency, hospitals can turn away whoever they want. For me, if I'm paying a hospital extra money, it better include morphine (for anything) and an extra special sponge bath.
