New Toy/ What You Can Find At Walmart At 4am
So remember that I was talking about netbooks and wanting one? Well, I stop at Walmart to pick up some milk on my way home and I spot this netbook with a $199 sign on it. I'm like, "no way!". So I corral a very reluctant employee to track down the keys to the case and sure enough it's the Acer Aspire one like at Att except without the sim card port. 160G HD, built in WiFi, weighs under 3 lbs, 1.6 processor, 1G DDR2, etc. Fucking Score!!! I've been playing with it and since it's Windows XP with 1G of ram, it's damn fast! WAY faster than my "good" laptop. Of course it doesn't have to deal with Vista and 100 other programs like my Dell does.
Obviously, the first thing I did was dowload a 1 1/2 hour movie from my GoPro.... hello, like 2 minutes! I think we have a winner! I'm gonna try it out for a week or so and see. Otherwise, there was a really nice piece at Best Buy for $300 with a 10" screen. Of course, there's always the "Evil Tigger" method of getting it from Radio Shack for $80, cancelling my contract with Att and kicking them their stupid $175 eary termination fee... it would still make that unit $255 which isn't too shabby since it retails for $400! |

My husband just bought and Acer Net book as well. Not sure of the specs. He goes away a lot with the Navy and tends to take my laptop with him since it is smaller. He's managed to drop mine off his rack Didn't do any damage surprisingly considering he's a good 4 feet off the ground. In any case, the little net book is gonna be great for traveling. On our bikes, one vacations, everyday life. It's super light, compact and fast.

My wife and I each have the first generation of the Aspire One. We love them over all but both have experience a BIOS lock and would no longer start. In my case Staples simply swapped it out, My wife's wich was purchased at Walmart we had to send to Acer in Texas who will either fix swap us out a new one. Love the little bugger though fits in a tail bag nicely. The other bit of info that may be worth knowing is that the Phillips Portable DVD carrier ($27 at staples) Is a great t well armoured brief case that Everything that came in the ACER box will fit in. It is much more rugged than the unit that is sold specifically for the Acer (wife bought one) and about 1/3 the cost

Thanks! That's good info to have! I'm trying it out as I said and I like what I see so far! My only disappointment so far is I'm having trouble getting a blue tooth adapter to work with the thing. Other than that, I'm quite pleased. I've already installed Firefox and Picassa, plus afew videos to see how it would react. Not too shabby for a couple hundred bucks! The only thing I may miss is the ability to use it with a cellular service... Hey, it would look funny but if I get blue tooth to work and got unlimited data, I wonder if I could use Skype and only pay about $60/month for unlimited calls and internet.... hmmm.... |

You really went and got one? Oh you went and got a normal laptop. Hey, are you bringing a computing device to the rally? I still may trailer. I have a buddy that just offered to loan me his trailer for free and a hitch is $159 installed for my car... Then I could bring my laptop, Rogue's jacket, My leathers pants and whatever else I need without spending another $100-200 on bike luggage I'll never use again. |

yeah I went and got one... updating it right now... I like it... as Rae said... it's perfect for on road trips and take'n pictures! kick ass...
my Toshibia seems to be work'n again... naturally... but I'm gonna wipe it out and give it to my bro I think... the only reason I had it was for the portability... and being it was a 17"... not the greatest in that aspect. thanks for the find tigg... oh and I'm riding for sure now... I need to put some miles on... and I've got monday off now... (still leaving sunday though) so I can take my time getting home... may run over and hang with Ambly if he's down... |
