Is it censorship when the original is someone else's property? Apparently he even liked them but it was just going too far, so he felt that he had to do something to protect his copyright.

I can see how you as a photographer would not want someone to take your photos and claim them as their own, since that hurts your recognition and possible earning potential. But that's not a concern with a movie or TV show. The clips are dimply dubbed over and made into parodies........They are not trying to act like they produced the movie.

IMO a lot of these lawsuits are born out of ego, rather than any legitimate desire to protect their self-interests. It's like "Hey, you didn't ask me for permission" or "It would have been nice if you had asked me first".......But that, alone, doesn't justify a lawsuit IMO.

Look at the number of posts in that other thread from people who had no idea what movie it was. It was against Youtube's posting rules.

I believe in "fair use doctrine", even when it comes to my own material. You want to talk about lawsuits, then Harlan Ellison is the guy you want to speak to

If they didn't know what movie it was from, then there is no harm to the copyright holder. In fact it possibly promotes it once people find out where it was from.

Not only that, but the people who designed the meme's aren't making any profit from them.
