A group of college students built a rig to send a camera up into the upper atmosphere aka space, and were able to retrieve the camera after the balloon dropped, 6 miles from their launch spot. Oh yeh and they did it for under $200.

I was into model rocketry in highschool. didn't get into it that much though.

this was a balloon and very impressive if you look at how they had to secure the box from the elements.
