Yeh that looks like the picures I have seen of kabul pre-soviet invasion, however that was just the main city, outside the city peopel still lived in mud huts. Once the soviets invaded and the country was basically destroyed all forms of education and medicine dissapeared, to the point where the literacy rate is in the low teens (I forget the actual number). Add to that the taliban culture and lack of basic services and rights and the country was pushed back into the 13th century. There are still places that we go visit that didnt even know the soviets invaded because they are so isolated, small villages of 100 people that have been intermarrying for hundreds of years.
