Default Gift cards - love 'em or hate 'em?

Gift cards - love 'em or hate 'em? Do you find a certain joy out of giving someone a gift you picked out for them?

Love them! They are perfect for my family which is all out of state. Let's them go get what they truly want rather than me picking something out for them. For someone closer to you like a husband/boyfriend/wife, etc....not so good. Too Impersonal...but for most people I love them and would prefer them rather than crap i don't need.

Brilliant marketing ploy.

If you are too lazy to give a gift, give cash.

I love them.

If you don't really have the time or inclination to pick out a gift but feel a social obligation to do so they are a great idea! I like getting them no matter what and certainly don't feel like the person thought any less of me or didn't care what they got me. I love that they thought enough of me to do it anyways.

But....you simply cannot replace the feeling when someone gets you a gift that is perfect for you. It happens rarely but it is pure joy when it does. I love giving that gift!

Nothing says you aren't worth shopping for like gift cards.

cash is better, gift cards limit my shopping ability

i like 'em and hate 'em

i hate them because - if it's someone I know well and am fairly sure what to get them I would prefer to get them a gift. if i'm short on time (poor planning) i'll resort to one

i like them for the opposite reason, if you're not really sure what someone would like they work. problem is they are very impersonal and really why not just give the person cash?

I love receiving gift cards from a bunch of folks to the same store of my choosing
I hate receiving a bunch of gifts cards to a dozen stores I never step foot into.

I hate giving gift cards because I have to stand on the same damn line as everyone else just to ask the cashier for a gift card.
I love giving gift cards to people who love giving gift cards because its like bartering, unless its for the same store. Then its like forcing myself to buy something at a store.

My son loves I-tunes gift cards. As a matter of fact one of the items he wants for Christmas is a visa debit card. I'm like that too, I'd rather pick out something I want than to receive some useless piece of shit I'll never use. Cash is king in my world.

Nothing says "You're FINALLY listening to my plees of no more flannel shirts and just getting me what I've asked for from you for YEARS" like a gift card.

Oh i NEVER give actual store gift cards - I go with Visa Gift cards. Use them where you want for what you want.
