Default Favorite laptop?

Toshiba?
Lenovo?
Alienware?
?

Don't need heavy gaming, just lightweight and reliable (no motherboard problems like HP's)

Would prefer flash memory over disc, but obviously that's more $$

I had a $1200 Dell XPS 13" "performance" laptop a few years ago which ended up with a dead video board after about 2 years, maybe a little less. After that I bought a cheap MSI A6200 Core i3 in 2010 for less than $500 which worked well until this summer when the HD failed then a little while later it would go into sleep mode when powering up and wouldnt wake. So today I picked up an ASUS K55A. Its on sale at Best Buy for $479 I think and its the cheapest Core i5 Ivy Bridge laptop right now.

For desktops Ive always had Macs and Ive never had one die on me, Ive been tempted to buy a MacBook Pro and be done with it but for the price I can afford to buy a new cheap PC laptop every 2-3 years.

I bought a cheap (under $500) Acer around 4 years ago that has done everything I need.

Probably 8 months ago the hard drive started making some loud noises at startup and occasionally it wouldn't boot (maybe 5% of the time). I bought a SSD drive with a swap kit (external enclosure, USB cable, hard disk imaging software) for about $120 (128GB drive, most media is on external drives) and I expect it to keep going for another year or two while being faster than new.

Lightweight and reliable, get one of the newer ultrabooks. Their prices seem to be dropping but still expensive ($800+). If you can deal with an extra couple pounds get a cheap Core i5, they look to be around $500.

Our HP pavillion is still kicking around since 2007, but that's only because I knew about the piss poor cooling design on it and always make sure that the vents aren't blocked. everyone else has had theirs die from (Vid card death\overheat\screen dumbfuckery) or been replaced.
I had a work 8510p (circa late 2007) up until last month. Not one issue with it.
Sister's bottom rung Dell from 2010 hasn't had any issues.

If I were shopping for a new one for the wife I'd get a mactop
otherwise I'd get an Asus

I had a Toshiba satelite that still runs well except the battery lasts about 10 minutes. But that one is going on 4 years old, hell maybe 5. I paid $600 for that one. I just got a brand new Toshiba satelite for $750 from Best Buy and this thing runs fast as hell. I'll play FSX with full graphics and it doesn't slow the computer down one bit. I also have a Toshiba netbook that runs pretty damn well too for about $250.

I guess I like Toshiba.

What will you be using the laptop for? Will it be your only computer or will it be strictly for traveling and working on the toilet?
