Likely one of those cases in which a manufacturer thought it would be a great idea to use their device driver in order to obtain some "additional information" about the people who buy their products. Reminds me of the potential abuse for Sony's DRM Rootkit.

How come if the computer allows you to do something, the thought process of whether you should do that or not disappears from logic?

Even in the corporate environment?

Think for a moment about the number of programs you may have installed on your PC. Then consider the number of programmers it took to write that shit.

Now, consider human behavior, and the likelihood that one (or more) of the geeky little rat bastards has left a convenient back door into your fucking shit, and you may come to realize that your computer is perhaps not entirely "yours".

That plus all the holes in operating systems like windblows makes me cringe.

Pffft. I have Vista. If one of those pricks can get it working right long enough to pull anything useful off my computer, I'm impressed enough to let them have whatever they want.

Open source is the only safe software.

From the standpoint of software creation, or use? If creation, then the rulings against Microsoft regarding how the Microsoft Network from Win95 would rifle through your system to see if you had unlicensed software should inform other manufacturers. In other words, "Don't infringe upon people's privacy."

I'll have to disagree with you there. Open Source is an easy way for unscrupulous programmers to slip various back doors into programmes. As the code is out in the open, vulnerabilities are easier to find both for reasons of correction, and exploitation. There is no commercial incentive for corrective action, in order to preserve corporate image.

It has its uses, but it's far from safe.

Well, open source at least makes criminals operate in the bright light of day, anyhow, as all their moves are at least "published". It's not impossible for them to do fishy shit, it's just far easier to be caught doing it in the open.

With closed shit like MS and Apple, you're placing a lot of trust in a lot of people who's moves are entirely hidden from everyone...on your computer.
