B-52s are about the oldest airframe still in service, followed closely by the venerable C-130s (ours are all 63-65 models) and the BUFFs (Big Ugly Flying Fuckers) are planned on being around until approximately 2040. You might think they are held together with duct tape and baling wire but in reality, about the only things that are that old are the framing (tho someparts of the frame have been replaced multiple times) and the wiring (again some harnesses are replaced as additional components are added or subtractedto the systems). So in actuality, most parts of those aircraft are much newer than the year model date as they are replaced as they wear out or break, everything from fuses and eletrical buses to wing root boxes... major overhauls happen after so much time or so many flight hours. Other than a little external skin, some of the frame work and some electrical, about the only thing that is old is the regrsitration number...

My dad told me a story about watching a C-130 land without a tail in Vietnam - had mad respect for those planes.

Damn I loved those stories. He didn't tell 'em a lot and unfortunately, now he is gone.
