Bomber struck as prince spoke by phone Arab News AFTERMATH: The scene of attack at Prince Muhammad’s palace in Jeddah, left, after Abdullah Hassan Tali Al-Asiri, above, blew himself up Thursday. (SPA) JEDDAH: The wanted Saudi militant who attacked the Kingdom’s anti-terror chief after pretending he wanted to surrender blew himself up while the official was on the phone reassuring another terrorist in Yemen it would be safe to return home, the Interior Ministry said Tuesday. The events that led up to Thursday’s suicide bomb attack began when Yemen-based Saudi militant, Abdullah Hassan Tali Al-Asiri, got in touch with the authorities, saying he wanted to give himself up to Prince Muhammad bin Naif, assistant interior minister for security affairs. Prince Muhammad agreed to see Al-Asiri and received him at his home in Jeddah late Thursday, an Interior Ministry spokesman said. During the meeting, Al-Asiri, who was on the country’s most wanted list, told Prince Muhammad that other Saudi militants who had fled to Yemen following the Kingdom’s anti-terror campaign wanted to surrender too but were seeking safe passage from the prince. “They wanted to hear this by phone from the prince himself,” said the spokesman in a statement, adding that the contact was made with one of the militants in Yemen while Al-Asiri was in the prince’s office. “The explosion occurred during the phone call,” said the statement. “It led to the death of the wanted man,” the spokesman said, adding that nobody else was injured in the incident. The spokesman said investigations have uncovered more details about the attack that cannot be revealed at this time for security reasons. In previous remarks Prince Muhammad admitted he ordered guards not to search Al-Asiri when he arrived at his home. Officials have said the prince wanted to treat the militant with respect and trust to encourage other wanted militants to come forward. In a taped telephone conversation between Al-Asiri and the prince aired on Saudi TV on Tuesday, the militant is heard asking the prince for a plane. The ministry statement said the man arrived escorted by security officers to the prince’s home. “I need to meet you to tell you the whole story,” the man told the prince during the telephone conversation. “If you come I will sit with you and both of us can discuss things,” the prince replied. “Be careful of bad people who want to exploit you,” the prince was quoted as saying to Al-Asiri. There have been various versions of the events. One reported by Al Arabiya news channel said the attacker concealed the explosives in his anus, allowing him to evade detection. The network also quoted an expert as saying that the method of concealment aimed the blast away from the target, while blowing the bomber to bits. A profile of Al-Asiri released by the Interior Ministry said the 24-year-old militant was born in Riyadh. He was recruited by an Al-Qaeda cell whose goals included assassinations and targeting oil installations in the Kingdom. In Yemen, he got military training, which included the use of mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and Sam7s.

Pardon me I have to ass you a few questions...
Why did he not ask the Prince to 'pull my finger?' Why did he not aim his weapon as any frat boy knows to do? Could he not have asked to sit on the princes lap for the confeession?
