Well according to your source for the definition of "coonasses"...they say this....

"The term redneck comes from The West Virginia Coal Miners March or the Battle of Blair Mountain when coal miners wore red bandanas around their necks to identify themselves as seeking the opportunity to unionize. EXACTLY!! And he's right, the coach is the best example people would realize of coon ass...cant understand a word their speaking, and the culture oddicies is like a different country, not just southern LA...

There's also situational coon assed-ness...take my dad. He is cultured, civilized and a great guy but a coon ass. Get him around fellow coon asses and WHHHOOOOOEEEE...off he goes...

And to me, Redneck is southern/midwestern whereas anything north of Mason Dixon is hill billy...with the term originating from the red necks of the midwest working out in the sun and having a redneck...

It only states that as one possible source, it goes on about how scots/celts settled the appalachian area as possible other sources from it's beginnings in england and appalachia is mostly definitely east tenn where a lot of them settled.
