Oy Vey.
First off, if you want to secede, you don't ask the White House for permission. Second- Have any of these idiots actually considered what a succession would entail? OK Texas, ( I'm picking on Texas because they keep talking about this) here's the deal: Step One: All Federal financial support ends now. Goodbye SS, Medicare, Highway funding, corporate subsidies (including agriculture) and everything else. Step Two: No more FBI, Disaster relief, or Coast Guard. Fuck you, buy your own boats. Step Three: Immediate closure of all US Military bases. All troops will be redeployed to AMERICA. Step Four: The immediate termination of all Federal land grants and Oil Leases. Feel free to drill all you want on private property. I could go on, but at this point Texas would be entirely fucked anyway. JC

It will be interesting to see if the WH even addresses it... or the pot one... which BTW, has almost 2x as many e-signatures that is needed for them to 'review' it...

Texas is net positive in simple terms of IRS revenue vs. federal funding, but AMJ is right in that those numbers don't include disaster relief, FBI and military support, etc. No idea where it stands on federal land acreage. That said, even though technically Texas and some other states like California could probably stand on their own, they would be nowhere near as successful as they are now. And how long before they become just another country waiting for a foreign aid check from the US?
States like Louisiana would be straight boned, right out of the gate. Louisiana is in the hole to the federal government by about $10 billion a year. It's easy to click on an internet petition. Actually going it alone, different matter. Wonder how many of these arm-chair secessionists would still be lining up for independence if the president actually came back and said "Go for it." Wonder how many are currently drawing social security...

I take these as seriously and give them as much thought as I've taken any online petition.
No doubt these are signed by the same people that made the "Forward this message and get $1 Zillion for each recipient, guaranteed by Bill Gates!" e-mail chains a smashing success. Last edited by fasternyou929; 11-14-2012 at 01:21 PM.. |

If we wanted to be dicks about it, (and why wouldn't we?) we (The Feds) could close all road and rail lines in and out of Texas, and restrict any and all trade with them. We could also impose a travel ban.
I would give them 6 months tops, before they came crawling back. JC

I dunno, with careful manipulation of business taxes even the most resource barren state could make a solid go of it.

If you actually look at the petitions on the White House website, about half of the signatures for each state are from people who don't even live in that state.
The petition for New York to secede was created by some guy in North Dakota. The best part is, some of my facebook friends are taking the petitions seriously.
