Take it back to where you bought it. I'd try that route before I drop the Benny.

I'd go to Best Buy or Walmart and claim that you got it as a gift and that you only want to exchange it. With the new one, get the warranty and hold on to the receipt. I know we've had this fight before but 1 out of 100 PS3s break and ! out 100 XBox360s don't (or at least haven't yet).

I've been researching PS3 failures in consideration of buying and repairing a broken system for myself. I read several accounts of laser failure in the new slim model very similar to yours. Your best bet would have been to exchange it at the store, but since you are lacking a receipt call Sony's customer support. There is a chance they'll just send you a refurbished system, however maintenance should be free since you are under warranty.
Of course, if you are cunning you can just try to pull off what Tigger suggested.

yea i ma have to try that bit soon - i MIGHT have the receipt will check tonight.
i checked other BDs last night and they all worked no problem. i am thinking it is not the laser but the firmware - i need to check on how to upgrade that.

Never had a bluray problem on the PS3.
BTW blurays don't scratch easily, so if there's one that won't play because of it, you're probably holding a disc that's broken in half. |

no its not a scratch issue - the disk is flawless, it is a format issue
