I agree the thing is just an animal, but I'm wondering why killing the little rodent was punishment for the kid? The kid was probably....fuck yeah now I don't have to feed that worthless thing. lol

That's a very jacked-up psychotic thing to do to the kid, no doubt. And it was obviously potentially very cruel to the rodent if it wasn't quick - but any more so than rat poison, or a trap that doesn't always break the neck, or being stuck until starved to death? Probably not, and the animal cruelty charges lack a little common sense & perspective, IMO.

Edit: Then again, the POS "Mom" does deserve the book thrown at her - and the kid taken away (though that can end up even worse).

And she was already on probation still a prety fucked up thing for the kid, I can see taking it away from him or something but forcing him to kill it is prety extreme.

He could, but he could also take this life lesson and become one of the most outspoken people for animal cruelty as well.

... or he could end up as another statistical correlation between killing animals and serial killers.

Having a pile of shit as a Mom definitely has its disadvantages either way.

Maybe Trip, but we shouldn't strive to raise our children through attrition and sociopathic behaviors.

I killed many a squirrel, bird, rabbit, and other forest creatures for fun with a 22 or pellet gun along with everyone I hung out with. Yet, there isn't a serial killer in the bunch.

There is a difference here as well, the kid didn't have a want to kill the animal, he was forced to do it.

Are you just playing devil's advocate or do you honestly not see the difference in being forced to kill what you consider a pet or hunting rodents with a BB Gun? I mean, it seems like you do since you state "there is a difference." Yet you're comparing the two like they have anything to do with one another.
