A friend did it a few years ago, wound up staying in Africs for 3 years building schools and wells, and living on like $100 a month. But the guy loved it and keeps telling me that it was the most worthwhile thing he ever did.

Well, you have to weed out the riff-raff and non-hackers.
It's a waste of time for them to ship someone over who'll get over there and be crying to come home in a month or start acting like an ass to the locals and do more harm than good.

DP... you're kind of a dabbler, man... and I say that as a fellow dabbler.
There are a lot of places in the world that you can do some good if you're willing to commit to it, but you have to be sure that you can.

i am definatly a dabbler, but i think i could do the corp for 2 years. then get it out of my system.
