You sure? I could have swore that I heard someone on the Steve Irwin exclaim that if they didn't find the Jap fleet as many as 50 or 60 whales would be murdered... It's one of the things that puzzled me the most about this show. Why all the drama over such a small number of whales.

Okay, they(tree huggers) say that 25,000 whales have been killed in over 34 years...but that's total world wide. Not just the Japanese. BTW did you know that they are against tuna fishing as well and have a campaign that is trying to put a stop to that as well? Son, I really like my tuna! WTF? Why don't they go bother those Deadliest Catch guys? I don't like crab all that much. In fact, what a great show, Whale Wars vs Deadliest Catch! I have a feeling the Sea Shepherd guys would get their butts kicked...

Know? Perhaps not. Postulate, based on the numbers we're no longer seeing in their mating areas and usual stomping grounds? Sure.

Frankly, I'm surprised no one has been killed on that untrained, unlicensed crew...

As Trip said the majority of whales they kill (Minke) are nowhere near extinction, or even endangered (population estimates usually start at the mid hundreds of thousands and go up from there). For the species more at risk the Japanese limit themselves to 50 each year out of estimated populations in the tens of thousands. I guess it comes down to what a person's objection is. If it is a moral objection, tough shit. If it is an environmental/species protection issue then the Minke killings should be acceptable.
