Whatever man, after talking to some of our officer's about their loan debt I'm glad I went the way I did. Even if the hazy deployment picture has deterred me from starting college just yet.

Thinking about your bike comment earlier...didn't your k6 receive its salvage status under your ownership? I remember you buying it back after at least one deerstrike and as such I don't think its admissable as a sympathy lure

I understand that we are talking economics AND race here. What strikes me is the premise that we (blacks) don't make any effort to get out of poverty.

I think that there are education issues, cultural issues and mostly attitude issues that need to be addressed before any real change will come about.

I don't see anyone saying what you are putting out in this post. Some welfare recipients work their way out of poverty, regardless of their race. Others lay around and work the system, regardless of their race. Being lazy is an equal opportunity thing.

Oh not sympathy, just answering to the "doing quite well" comment, that's all.

I don't look at my situation as well off or wealthy by any means...

Besides, the point was (as far as I can remember now

) that a black kid from the hood has the same exact opportunities in this country as an upper middle class white kid from the suburbs. Not all kids have to take out loans to go to school. Again, I'm not saying that the military is necessarily a BAD choice but I think that it's sad when it's the "best" or "only" choice. I also don't see it as the "solution" for the county's welfare problem, especially since most of the people on welfare are women, if I'm not mistaken. Do you all really think that we want to bring a bunch of single mom's into the armed services?

Really. Heck, for that matter, do we really need more criminals in the Army? You all do understand that most of the people in prison started down that path WELL before they would have been old enough to join the military, right?

We have to change the pattern a lot earlier than their 18th birthdays my friends.

Yea she works, gets grants and gets money from her family for school. My point is that going to college doesn't automatically mean that you have to incur a six figure debt is all...

Here's the problem that I have with this whole discussion. It is predicated on the premise that we are ALL created equal and that my friends is definitely not the case.

Despite some fancy language to the contrary I agree that we are all not "created" equally. In my opinion though those who spend their lives gaming the public assistance system are pretty equal, no matter what color their skin happens to be.

I would say a majority. I haven't meet many that actually deserve it.
