My vet has told us that Ibuprofen is not safe for dogs. One of my dogs has pretty bad hip displasia and the resulting arthritis. The NSAIDs we give him are from the vet and specifically for dogs.

Popular brand name drugs that contain Ibuprofen are Advil and Motrin. Ibuprofen is NOT considered safe for dogs and can in some instances be quite toxic to their kidneys, liver and gastrointestinal tract. The medications prescribed by your vet have been proven to be safe for long term use in dogs. Perhaps your veterinarian can find you an alternative medication that is both cheaper and safe for your dog.

Dogs forget real fast about their injuries when they go to the vet. Mine strained a tendon jumping off the bed. She limped around for a whole night before I took her in the next morning. The minute she hit that vet office.... halleluja she could walk again!!!!

Maybe I'm thinking of aspirin. I know he told us he could take something. Like I said we have prescribed pain meds for him though that we keep on deck.

When our Great Pyrenees had knee surgery, askmrsjesus scored some Tramadol from an online Canadian pharmacy. The scrip is actually in her name, not the dog's.

You just fill out a form online, tell them you have back pain, or something (you do have back pain, right?) and voila, you can get a bottle of the stuff for cheap. I think we paid 60 bucks for 180 tabs @50mg. each. The vet wanted more than triple that.

Check with your vet for dosage, At the start, we were giving her one every four hours, (she's 80 pounds). After she healed a bit, we reduced it to two a day. She was confined to a small pen, to keep her from running around, for three months. The Tramadol worked great, and basically kept her stoned all day. She would have gone nuts without it, as she's a very active dog.

Tramadol is approved for humans (at least in Canada...) and two with a beer works good on my knees, after a hard day's dual sporting in the woods.

I work in veterinary warehouse, ship out boatloads of the stuff everyday. Glad to hear the dog is on the mend.

And yes, as AMJ says, the stuff is God awful expensive.
