I can't say it would be high on my list of ways to spend an afternoon, but if my girl wanted me there for "moral support" or whatever, I wouldn't have problem with it.

Aw it's no worse than "old man"/"old lady", Hell, back in the day, I believe the term was "my child's father" or something like that. It's basically a disassociation from the gentleman in question. In effect saying, "this man is nothing to me".
