The chi has it right; you either want a camera that has a macro mode, a macro "lens" that fits over a point & shoot's lens, or a DSLR and a real macro lens.

*EDIT* I just checked and a Canon Powershot G12 will focus to within 1cm.

If you think that's high zoot, then you REALLY don't want to know what the DSLR option would cost

DSLR FTW!

Spend the extra money buy a DSLR and figure it is one of the last if not last camera you will ever need to buy.. I picked up a Nikon D3000 in May and it is fucking sweet.. point and shoot $200 cameras are fucking garbage, period..

And what if you want something pocket-size? Not everyone wants a camera bag on their shoulder all the time.

There's a chance it's going to get dirty hence the working on my wheels part. I'm not going to spend hundreds on a camera to be covered in oil.

And that's why I own a camera phone... if the shot is unimportant or "casual" a decent 5 meg phone will suffice. If you really care about the picture then you break out the luggage. I've honestly had cameras on phones that were comparable to a $200 p&s camera. My Sony A230 DSLR cost $300 a few months ago...
