You have a hot tub at your house? Jealous...

You take time off so your CNS recovers, moreso than your muscles.

Sounds like you need a chiropractor.

For tightness and soreness from my back being out of place, or muscle spasms i usually just head to the chiropractor. If I can't make it there, then I usually just lay down and try not to do too much, muscle relaxers and massages.

If it's really bad, see if your doc will give you a presciption for Flexeril (sp? I'm not gonna check) It's not a real strong muscle relaxer but works really well on my lower back if I'm so bad I can barely move. I can also take 1 and function during the day if I need to.

Are you a big guy? I take flexerol too and it knocks me out. I cut it in half now, and even then I'm down and out for like 18 hours I only take it out of desperation.

Actually no, but I love it.

Like how much/often should I be taking off? I usually just did 2 weeks all year, split up by 6 or so months. I was just "off" sort of because I was too sick to train, but rarely do I just stop.

best thing I have tried, learned from a doctor.

Get into the shower, turn it up as hot as you can stand. let it go for a minute or two. now turn it to as cold as you can stand and let it go for a minute or two.
continue this a few times. it "massages" the muscles by making them flex in and out kind of thing.

otherwise for temp relief Bio freeze works good.
very firm (as in plywood under the mattress) bed to sleep on
sleep on your back, roll to your side then "roll up" in the morning

once it feels better find some good strengthening exercises for your back.
reverse crunches work well
push ups
stretching and yoga style are great as well.

Stretching is a must. I also found that whenever my workouts worked my abs more than my back - my back would hurt. There is an exercise called the 'Superman' where you lie face down on the floor and alternate lifting your arms and legs off the floor. Right arm and left leg together, then alternate.

Ibuprofen.
