i hate to say it but honda is a much better value for your dollar then chevy

only down side is that the dogs will have the backseat, but it has a hitch so the rare times i need to take the trailor some where i have the option

they're pretty close honestly. But I do know honda's more reliable. But having someone who can get you employee discount plus extra off kinda helps in buying/leasing a new vehicle.

My only worry would be why the engine was replaced at 88k. Did he rag on it so bad it needed a new engine? If so, he probably continued to rag on it after that.

Here's my experience with Subarus: powertrain is bulletproof as hell and will withstand a ton of abuse (the last one in the family got well over 150k), BUT, if there's even the slightest ding in the paint and you drive anywhere near salted roads, get it taken care of the second it happens (ie YESTERDAY) or the whole damn car will rot out from that point. I'm not talking touch-ups to the paint, I'm talking bringing the sucker to a shop and having it professionally fixed (even the slightest dent). We have 50k on the clock of our current Subaru (a Legacy sedan) and it runs like the day it was new.

Engine change scares me unless they can prove that they did it just because and not "I was being a dumbass and blew the thing."
