I just looked up 3-series on wikipedia, and here's what it says:

BMW E21 - (1975–1983) 3 Series

Can you look at those codes and tell me, how would you know that the first gen was an "E21" unless someone told you? And why do the numbers jump from E46 to E90? Is there any way you could know that without being told in advance?

Truth.
The 90's were "the shiznit" for auto styling........Consider the 360 Modena, the Diablo, the 2nd gen Acura Legends, the original A4, the M3, the RX7, the 300ZX, the 240SX.......

Everything's gone downhill since then, due to constant "upsizing", higher grills for safety standards, and Honda switching from double-wishbones to wack-ass strut suspensions.

I remember the big thing with Honda and Acura were the low dashboards and good sightlines.

I was never big into Audi...mainly because they always seemed like overpiced VWs and there really wasn't a lot on the road but I did think the ealier Quatro's were "interesting".

I think the 3 series from the late 80's really great looking cars and I think the design has held up well. Especially the 2dr cars.
The last gen RX-7 is such an awesome car...if only the motor\turbo setup would last unmolested by mechanics hands.

There have been quite a few cars from the 80's and 90's that at the time I didn't think much of but now I kinda appreciate the design language.

Due to the double-wishbones.......Plus you could slam them with lower springs and still not run out of travel.

A Prelude from the early 90's is a classic.........Skinny pillars and low hoodline. Nowadays the Japanese seem like they want to imitate 70's American cars, with high dashboards and 10 cubic feet of empty space around the engine.

don't know what jap cars your lookin at, but my accord and ody don't/didnt have 10 ft. neither does my maz P5.

Take the plastic shrouds off, and then compare how much space there is compared to one from the 90's

you must have some tiny hands

cuz i can't even get my bear claws in to check the belt tension on my P5 cuz of the lack of space let alone replace one.

hell i had to move the brake booster bottle, to get to the passenger side hi-beam, and even then Z couldn't fit her hands in that space. but i eventually got it. after some bleedin knuckles.

and here's a V6 accord, have all the room you want from top of valve cover to hood, it's the sides that count, since thats where the belts are at, and that ain't alot of room. then there's trying to replace the back bank of plugs.........
