A mixture of everything, Ju Jitsu is very practical. Combat Hop Kido, Tae Kwon Do, Crab Magaw (israeli fighting style) or russian sambo they are all very good and all have strengths and weaknesses what ever you decide to do; do different stuff. If your a purist in just 1 martial art your bound to get your ass whooped(especially the karate guys in my experience they think they are hot shit then you take them to the ground and they cry). It also depends on your teacher he/she can make it fun and a hard workout or you can have an absolute douche bag like most teachers who want to get you into fights and runt heir school like boot camp. Treat it like everything you get what you put into it, but have fun.

My class for example is a mixture of Ju Jitsu Judo Combat Hop Kido and a bit of kempo karate

And by the way Judo without ju jitsu is useless. Congrats you know how to throw someone now what.

Martial arts or any sparring type sport isn't just about fighting. It teaches self control, confidence, aside from self defense.

I took shotokan for a couple of years. I'd love to take BJJ and Akido, but it's not taught here.

I'll take a BJ too... oh wait..

About the martial arts thing... yeah, if you just want to win a fight, bring a gun. However, the benefits to strength, reflexes, and mental focus that martial arts offer could make you better with a gun as well.

There are places popping up that teach MMA style martial arts... Blending a lot of different styles with the ultimate goal to just whip someone's ass.

Depends. A number of martial arts teach weapon defenses, including gun defense. Like so:

Congrats and keep up the hard work. My 11 yo son has been in TKD for almost a year. He's only a yellow belt though Another year he should be a green belt.

If you have a good instructor most any of them are good to get in to. It's definitely more to it than just the ability to fight/defend yourself although that is the main reason most get involved.

I was an ametuer boxer before getting into TKD. I learned right quick about the power and length of a leg/foot v.s just relying on my fist.

I left TKD for Kempo Karate because it suited me better for my job in executive protection because it combined soft fist techniques.

There are so many to choose from it's easy to get overwhelmed but again...if you can find a good instructor...any of them is better than none of them.

These days with the popularity of MMA if you can find a place that trains for this with good instructors imho it is your best bet.

It's better to be well rounded and good at several different styles v.s. an expert in one imho in case you get taken out of your element.

Having said this...it's really up to you and what you want out of it.

To the OP...good luck man...and congrats on your accomplishments.
