Of course there is a difference, that's why I said that. The serial killer thing is associated with kids who go around killing pets/animals because they want to do it because they like it. This kid didn't kill his pet because he wanted to do it, he was forced too, huge difference.

Killing the hamster isn't cool but I can think if a way better and harsher punishment like having to read the dictionary and encyclopedia for 2 hours every day until his grades improved to 3.5 gpa.

Seriously doubt that's how this ends up for this kid...but that doesn't stop me from wanting the Mom to get a prison sentence.

To a human considering the ethical ramifications there's certainly an arguable difference.

But to the creature being killed, quick & easy vs. painful & slow is about the only thing which is of meaning to it.
