My son is 6 and he has been in TKD for about a year now. He got his yellow belt a couple of months ago and just won 3 medals in his first tournament.

1. Form
2. Sparring -winning against both orange and blue belt students older than him
3. 3rd place overall in the tournament

Since he lives 1/2 way across the state and I wasn't told he was going to be in a tournament I didn't get to see it in person. however, hs mother told me last week about it and I'll get to see it on DVD soon.

Congrats to OP (which I forgot in my first post).

Most others have said make sure you get a good instructor...how do I know if the instructor is good? What should I be looking for when I check out the class? How many classes should it take for me to know if the instructor is good or not?

Granted, when I was in Korea, I learned within about a month that the instructor there sucked. A. He raised prices 3 times in that one month. B. He wanted me (and several others) to test for yellow within that first month. I barely even knew what the hell I was doing yet. C. He was having a birthday party for himself and wanted all of the students there. He said it's customary for students to bring the teacher a gift. I quit right after that.

Yea treat an instructor like anyone else, judge their character and put yourself in his position what would you charge how would you teach, they are people too. If you don't feel you are working hard enough or are working too hard switch classes or ask the teacher for an alternate workout.

Those Korean teachers are awfully arrogant.
They tell you things like "You move like a pregnant yak" and make you train in dangerously high places.

Congrats to the OP whether you get it or not tonight! Just getting to the point where you're ready to test is a major accomplishment
