while I prefer to provide a consequence directly related to the offense, spanking when used as punishment IS effective. Not striking your child out of anger, not lashing out at them in frustration - that's not what I'm talking about. I have spanked my children and as lately as last night, I told my 15 year old if she wasn't asleep by a certain time, I WOULD spank her. And I was dead serious. As young children, it was sometimes the only consequence that meant something to them. They UNDERSTOOD what a spanking was. A time out? Hell, that was a reward, not a consequence depending on the action. Do they need taken away from a situation? Then a time out make sense.
My kids are well behaved and NOT abused. I have duct taped them in the past. I'm not kidding. there is a story behind it. The lesson was learned.

I have a 2 boys, an 8 month old and a 4 year old.
The 4 year old is very well behaved, uses his manners, has never thrown a temper tantrum and is a good kid. On those occasions when he does get "fresh", all it takes is a few words from Mommy or Daddy. I have never laid a hand on him. While I am not against spanking, I feel that many parents are both too quick to spank and do it at too early an age. I think parents who spank children under the age of 2 are wrong to do so at that stage in a childs development. Between 2 and 3 can be iffy but overall I think there are much better methods at setting up an enviroment where the "command structure" within the home is laid out. Thanks to 3 little words...my kids are spank free. "No","Stop" and "Don't" However I think a lot of parents are impatient self centered morons whose only talent is to raise monsters. The "spankers" that I do know have constentily shown other poor parenting practices. "I put the TV on and that keeps them occupied" "Would your son like some soda?" "My kid LOVES french fries and chiken fingers...that's all he eats" fail....fail...fail... That being said...I think spanking is a valid tool in the parents arsenal. However, just like cops and tazers, it seems to many are quick to go straight for the belt. I support the use...when appropriate.
