It's not the risk of death... it's my pathological fear of heights. Put me on a ladder I start to get antsy. I'm the same way. Heights are creepy...I hate flying too.

In an odd psychological twist, I actually love flying. Love roller-coasters too (except for the elevator-drop style rides). Only one time did flying bother me - flying into San Diego, the pilot did a hard bank over the city, and being close enough to be able to make out buildings and feeling like I could fall through the window (even though, logically, that wasn't going to happen) made me nervous.

I'm exactly the same way... except the hyperventilation part... I can usually control myself for the most part... skidmarks not withstanding.

Is it any dumber than riding a motorcycle? There are big wall climbers all over the world, thousands of them, and per capita, there are far less deaths than on motorcycles. I know this because a rock climbing article I once read on climbing safety, actually mentioned just that, specificly using MC's as an example.

I have a harness, climbing shoes (YES! They do make em in a 15!), chalk bag and belays and caribiners, and once in a while I go out to the 'local' (about 40 minutes away) wall (man made, not an actual rock wall), and its one of the hardest things to do, just on an advanced practice wall, that I have ever tried. And thats while top roped, not carrying and installing safety gear.

I have a ton of respect for the people who do this stuff, it takes a ton of endurance and strength, as well as mental fortitude.

Different things scare different folks, I guess. I guess being a motorcyclist means you're not afraid to fall...3 feet...but beyond that, YMMV.
