It's to weed out the cheap fuckers that just want a free thing, or don't have the cash to take care of the animal right, or can't afford to take care of it when it's sick. I charged one when I was adopting out a cat.

Purebreeds are expensive to buy, why should they be free to re-home?

Purebreed puppies from reputable breeders shouldn't be free. They bred for competition and such. Backyard breeders and puppy mills are widely thought as douchebags, so no point in bringing them up further.

However, I am not looking for a puppy. I am looking for an unwanted dog. I have stated I already now understand using this as a way to weed out worthless individuals. I still think wanting a high dollar rehome fee for an unwanted older pet is kinda trashy. You don't need to be a rich person to be a good pet owner.

A lot of these ads you can tell are people who bought puppy mill purebreds and got in over their heads and now trying to recoup their fuck up and pawn off the unwanted dog. I have a problem with that.

"rehoming fees" should only be like $75-150. Just enough to discourage people who want free shit.

she wouldn't stop until I told my friend to mention it was taxable income if the fees were demanded not accepted as charity.

Wow, that's ballsy. But it takes a special kind of person to live in the Mouse House, so hopefully that's not the way others handle it.
