Meh. If you're a one-horse town in the middle of god-forsaken nowhere, you take the industry that comes along or you die anyway. I sincerely doubt anyone but oil men and roughnecks are lining up to live in Almont, ND.

Boom/bust economies seem to work alright in west Texas. It's not exactly stable, but we've got cities and everything...

So I come back to the question of, "Who are the supposed patrons of this theoretical steakhouse or renters of this theoretical apartment complex?" The town seems to want free economic growth. That doesn't exist. So from what I can see it's either take a chance on the only interested party or slowly bleed to death.

If that's what they're waiting for, then they'll be waiting a while. Doesn't mean that they should sell to a shanty manager.

Farmers, ranchers, hunters, dog trainers, etc.

Boom bust economies in TX also have a lot more illegal mexican's involved.

In random other ND towns maybe, but apparently not Almont. Otherwise why would the school building in question have closed down for lack of children? Maybe it's off base, but the article doesn't describe Almont as a town with many, if any, other options.

Whatever. In an economy with no jobs, everyone should be happy to look up and see rig derricks standing. Especially those without work. Big money, hard work, and much better than unemployment.

It reminds me very much of the love-hate relationships that towns with military bases have. All the civilians hate the military members who "ruin" their peaceful, beautiful town. Until a deployment or war clears out the base. "We love the military" signs spring up pretty quick afterward...

The problem is that everything is coming in so fast that the infastructure cannot handle it. No housing, grocery stores and restraunts can't keep up, the roads are getting destroyed, and city utilities are being overtaxed trying to keep up with the demand.
By the time all this catches up, the boom will be over and the money gone, so it will be a waste.
