Damn close. When I ran track and cc in high school Id do 2 miles in about 1130 and I wasnt all that fast. The dude just needs to push himself.

No "I" did the run and got 11:30...he got 16:30.

We did the run again last night and he knocked 1.5 min off the time.

Something I found that works for me is wearing a heart rate monitor. During my races sometimes I feel like I'm tired but I know I'm really not if my HR is less than 170. It's a mental thing. He would have to figure out where his heart rate should be.

Another thing is to run from one telephone pole to the next at a slightly faster pace and then slow down a little between the next. In the end my pace ends up being about the same between poles but in my mind I'm speeding up and slowing down. This also has helped me keep a decent pace during my races.

As far as eating a high carb meal the night before, I'm not 100% sure I agree with this. I've been experimenting with different things myself. One PT told me to eat a high carb meal (like pizza) because I have low body fat and weigh 120lbs and that I need the extra carb for reserves. But I've read that you should eat a lighter meal that is easy to digest. I run 5K's or farther, so I'm not sure I would have your friend each a big carb meal the night before, maybe 2 nights before especially since he has the reserves and is only running 1.5 miles.

yeah, a pacer that runs away from you does no good.
I aim for around a 15 - 15.5 min 2 mile. I don't look for a pacer that is gonna run 13 min. I want a guy running 14.5-15. Just enough to keep him out in front of me, but in sight so I'm constantly pushing.

First off can I say I loathe running.... I would rather do anything else. When i condition for hockey I do agility drills and sprints, and do distance on my blades with like 3/4 gear on and stick.

BUTTTT... when i do have to run- a) I would rather have a running buddy that can out pace me cause i get lazy and walk. b) I would rather run in the rain. c) i would rather run on a treadmill out of the cold, cause its not healthy.

but that's the point... he needs someone faster than him to stay out in front... they're job is to PACE... not just run as fast as they can

I cannot run on a fuck'n treadmill... I over pronate (sp?)... ie my feet cross over... basically they land on the same line as the other... so on a tread mill I tend to loose balance for some reason...

and I've never heard it being not healthy to run in the cold...

Rain helps keep you cool, your muscles will still get warm from the ambient temp, but your core temp will stay good. I can run a 1.5m in 10:15 alone, sub 9:30 with a running buddy and I'm running a couple times a week.

About a year ago I managed 8 miles in an hour, but that's only bc I had a friend with me. It really helps when you've got someone there to challenge you.
