Definitely do some shorter distance racing prior to, but I think you need to push farther than a 10K. See comment above.
Ice baths are incredible. They suck pretty bad at the time but they work wonders.

Lol I wouldnt be completely opposed to it but Im honestly so far from half marathon shape its ridiculous. I can do a little more than a 5k right now at a jog pace and thats probably about it. I couldnt even race a 5k right now. If I could ever stay motivated to run Id probably get back into like I have lifting.

And yes a half is 13.1 miles, not 13.6, a full marathon is 26.2.

I agree completely about racing shorter distances before jumping right into a half. Trying to race that long of a distance would not be fun when you are trying to keep up with other peoples pace and then realize how far you've still got left.

15 weeks later I completed 13.1 miles running the entire time and finishing in under 3 hours. I finished ahead of more than 30% of the runners who showed up for the finish line. I finished ahead of 100% of the runners who didn't show up.
My times aren't fast - but I set and achieved my goal. Not your goal. But I don't know you and you dont' know me.

Go race Rossi on the track. What's your goal? do your best, don't crash, and finish or finish ahead of him? And that's just on a motorcycle - not pushing your body past it's current limits.

Probably never because I was always active. Increasing anything 10 fold means you didn't do squat for years and can most likely have sharp newbie gains. I see the same thing with people lifting weights and gaining some weight.

Your gains are pretty typical for someone who didn't run in the past and might be heavier. I'm not seeing the point.

See that is the point. I'm not going to go race any racer on the track because I don't train for it. Same for going out and running 13 miles if I never trained for it.

I have goals to gain 10-20lbs on the deadlift, 10lbs on flat bench and 10lbs on squat for a max set of three over a 6 week period. Attainable goals that I can keep progressing over future training intervals.

That's awesome and I'm sure with training you'll do fine.

I suggest getting some sort of training aid such as a garmin or a Nike Plus to log miles and runs.

Hal Higdon has great plans, plus he reminds me of Mandelbauhm on Seinfeld and that cracks me up.

I'm running a half in October too. Haven't signed up yet since I'm thinking I might try and do one in North Carolina when I head to the Gap again this year.

I did it. and I'm more out of shape than you are. At least I was. I went from not being able to run/jog for 2 minutes to finishing the half marathon (13.1 miles) in 2:59.31 - under 3 hours and running the entire race, no walking. I'm only 5'-6" and over 200 pounds - was about 220 when I started training.
My training plan started with a walk/run interval - the training plan was actually for doing intervals for the race but I started really pushing myself and was able to do the training distances all running, no walking.
My plan is here (fine print - I'm NOT a doctor or an expert of ANY kind. This is just what worked for me). It's a 15 week plan but was adopted from a 12 week plan - there's some repetition near race day that can be trimmed.
