Pansies... It's only electricity. Didn't anyone ever charge up capacitors and toss them at your buddies? Not shutting the breaker off was bone headed thing to do though. At least your well enough to tell us about it.

I was outside installing a light fixture yesterday and just shut the switch off, not the Breaker. There's only myself and my GF here so I knew I would be safe. Especially after my warning to her..

"Don't turn on the switch"

"The switch for the light you're working on?"

"Ya...But just in case, dont touch any switch in the house until I say so"

While I was working on it, I grabbed a wire and twisted it in an awkward way. Something in my hand popped and sent a pain right up to my shoulder. I've been shocked by 120Vac before and it felt the same. I actually had to go check the switch again to make sure it was off and it was. Weird.

That's what my father does. He's an electrician though, so he usually takes all the precautions including shutting the breaker off. Unless he's messing with something that he wired himself he doesn't trust anyone's electrical work but his own. You'd be surprised how many light switches and outlets he's run into that are improperly grounded or are otherwise sloppy. It only takes a several seconds of electricity to die, so why not just spend the time flipping the switch?

Oh yeah I could go all crazy... I do all that LOTO stuff at work and have to be re-certified every year on it and for all the different types of power sources from electrical, pneumatic, pressure, ect... but for around the house and just me and maybe a bud or wife. The tape over the switch is fine. Mostly its due to open wires during remodeling.
