Most of the reason every from TX hates Houston is that it's a huge city and with that comes the usual traffic issues, rude people, over-crowding, long commutes, etc. So Yes if I were asked to leave Austin and live there I'd rather poke out an eye. However, you're from NY so most of that probably won't bother you much. Houston has a higher cost of living than most places in TX but probably cheaper than NY too.

you won't really have any heating costs but you will run your A/C from Feb - Dec and sometimes in between. We pay no state or local taxes like PA did but instead have higher sales tax rates usually 8.25 - 8.75%. Property taxes really depend on where you live but someone else mentioned 3-4% and that's probably about right.

I prefer the south due to year-round riding! Houston is humid and your first year or two you will hate life in July-Aug. You do get used to it though....

The only highly-educated people in Texas are engineers like yourself, & healthcare workers. Other industries aren't very well-represented there. For example there isn't a big financial, legal, advertising, or journalism industry there, as much as there is in NY. People with diverse opinions & backgrounds, & countries of origin.

Not to mention the arts & entertainment opportunites pale in comparison to NY

At your age, and still being single w/o kids, I'm not sure what the draw of Houston would be, other than a lower cost of living.

In the South, if you're not married by your age, you are an outlier. Better be religious too.

For about the same cost of living, you could go to Denver, which is full of people your age group, and has a ton more receational opportunities. And no it isn't as cold as NY.

Dubbs is on Long Island out in Suffolk county.

MUCH MUCH different than NYC.

You can always tell who is originally from Queens (and then moved out to the "Island") and who was born and raised out in the sticks.

Queens folk are always friendly and quick to offer a conversations.
Native Long Islanders are judgmental, wont acknowledge you snooty pooties.

Engineers..tend to be judgmental and outside of the field of interest are hard headed and close minded.

The truth about living with "financial, legal, advertising, or journalism"

Financial - Investment folks really live up to the stereotype of asshole. Non investment types are all over the map.

Legal - Arrogance, elitist pricks through most firms but those that specialize in labor have some good folks. Public sector legal is filled with whiney "I'm broke...mah student loans are so big!! Why can't I get a job at that place I want a job at?!!"

Advertising - Holy fuck all hell between these folks and fashion industry scum I want to punch a hipster with a skinny mocha lachatto death grip on a fashion magazine just finished a salad plastic sunglass...fuck I can't even begin on these people. Big on opinions...small on actual clues. On anything.
If enough people like something on social media then it is 100% fact.
Thats how these people roll.

Journalism - Broke...waiting to be fired or has already been fired and now contributes to a "blog". I don't cross paths with any of the new breeds or tech writers who seem to be a dime a dozen (and broke) but the old guard is in the family. Overall...it seems to be a lot of rehashing of the same old shit you find out is trending.
