As I've said, this is like HDTV, BluRay, Etc, etc, etc...if you don't want it or can't afford it, it must be worthless or there isn't any point to owning it. Yeesh...

I have always had one. Has saved my ass more times than I can remember.

Plus, even when you are not speeding, it is always nice to know when there is a LEO in the area with a radar gun. A quality detector is definitely a potential ace up your sleeve.

You also need to understand what your detector is telling you when it beeps. It is pretty easy to tell what alerts are bogus, if you understand the types of radar, and how strong the signal is when it is detected. It won't work miracles for you, it just gives you intel on who is broadcasting around you.

I've been using radar detectors for many years and I've had several units. Cheaper units = more noise and are less useful. The higher end units = less noise and are very useful. It is just my opinion, and YMMV, but if you are serious about keeping tickets to a minimum, invest in a good detector and read about how cops use their radar guns.

Radar Roy was mentioned already in this thread, he knows his shit. His site is worth poking through and reading some of his articles.

I can honestly say that having a radar detector has saved me at least half a dozen tickets or more in the last 10 years, and I've never been ticketed for speeding while using one.
Summed up their use perfectly.

I have been thinking of getting a V1 with pop. Going to cost some $$$. But may be well worth it.

But I prefaced my posts with that and said I don't know how often they use those technoligies where he drives.

And for some reason that upset you. It gets a bit tired is all.
Okay but what if they instant on the car a couple ahead of you? Obviously you don't understand how radar detectors work. Trip asked for advice on which radar to get, not opinions on if he should get one. You know what? I'm placing a voodoo hex on you! You will get a speeding ticket this Summer, I guarantee it!!!

You sure about that?

If you knew me at all, you'd know how ridiculous a statement that is.

If they instant on the car ahead of you, that's great, you get an advanced warning. If they laser the car ahead of you, you have no idea.

We're playing the voodoo hex game?! In that case, if I get a speeding ticket this summer, your next gf will be older than you!!

True, no LIDAR detector is going to save you from a ticket, they are worthless. I have laser detection turned off on my x50. Contrary to RADAR jamming, LIDAR jamming is still legal in most states. If you invest in the gear, it is totally effective in most cases. Radar Roy has an excellent write up of an actual test he did with actual LEOs and their gear.

Well if she is, I bet she'll be rich so WIN! If you understand how radar works, why the ridiculous statements? You must know that other than one or two very specific circumstances, radar detectors are very effective. Besides, again, if it saves you from even one ticket it has paid for itself, do you disagree with this statement?

I may be wrong it sounds like,

a. Trip is going to speed.

b. The police have increased their speed limit enforcement.

c. He's going to get a ticket unless he does something.

If the police in Tenn are anything like here, they ride around with their radar on for the most part. No bullshit, (here's where I curse myself) it's almost impossible to get a ticket around here if you own a detector.

I've found that even when not using it to keep myself out of, um, trouble, my radar detector has helped me multiple times. People do stupid shit when they see a cop, even if they aren't speeding.

I've been moving at the posted limit when my detector went off... and when the dumbass in front of me (also traveling at the posted limit) noticed the cop, he/she slammed on their freakin' brakes and I almost ate their bumper. From that point on, I cover the brake when I'm in traffic and my detector goes off... it's saved me more times than I can count from the exact same situation.
