Incidentally, Peter Egan just happened to write about valve adjustments in this month's CW

Unless your engine has set screws I wouldnt fuck with the valves. Ive hardly seen or heard someone say their shimmed valves were out of specs. Most that do adjust them are the OCD bikers.

I expect to have to swap shims on my cbr, it has a very slight tick. Others have told me they don't hear it, but I do.

Besides the case swap after the get off, how often do you do your valves and how often have they been out of spec?

I usually check them every 30k-ish or so, since they rarely ever move. Had a couple exhaust valves out of spec at 100k and that's been the only real adjustment. I need to check them again though... I've been lazy, lol

This is true. It actually took place in my basement. Just sat in front of the high powered Wheel Barrow in a chair with a few beers at my side
The 954 didnt even make it to the first adjustment. Which is why it was split in half. Multiple super tight exhaust valves. One was pushed further than it could handle.

Sounds like the factory didn't do a good job setting the valves as I'm gonna guess the 954 uses shims.

Yep, shim under bucket. I've talked to other 929/954 owners who had to really keep on top of valve adjustments. Not to mention the cylinder scoring/oil consumption problems many of the ones I've seen deal with. I love that model but they seem to carry a lot of baggage.
