I like rats, but I don't that A will want one. I want to get something should wouldn't mind having in the house since she will have to take care of it too.

I wouldn't mind a bird, haven't ruled one out.
Birds are icky nasty things...if she doesnt want to deal with an animal when you arent home, get something small in a cage...Im still on the flying squirrel, Sugar gliders! They do require socialization and interaction, but are tiny, easy to carry around while you are just putting around the house, and cute enough A might like it some.

My friend has 4 birds in a big enclosure in his downstairs living room. One is a big grey African Parrot, and the other is a yellow crested cockatoo. Then there is two smaller ones. The grey parrot is a bitch, he only will be handled by drew. The cockatoo will fly right up to your shoulder and sit there. He speaks as well! When she is hungry, she imitates drew's mom and says "Dreeewww, go feed the birds." She can do R2-D2, the cats meow, and the phone. He only has to clean the newspaper every couple days....

On the aquatic level, how about a shark??? Really cool, but mihgt cost ya about $7,000....

Even though you said furry, have you thought about a bird? Some make really cool pets too.

Actually I recommend NEVER GETTING ANY KIND OF BIRD - EVER!! I have an African Grey and a Senegal parrot. I've had the grey 14 years and the senegal 13. I will never get used to the beeping burglar alarms, microwaves, alarm clocks, my sons wild play screaming when he was 2... I could go on and on and on..

They will be with me forever but birds just shouldn't be kept as pets IMO. Obviously I didn't feel that way before getting them.. Anyway, keeping birds in cages in wrong - I mean you don't get a dog and then cut off its legs do you?

Yea I mentioned fish as well. It really doesn't sound like your wife wants to have a lot of interaction with whatever you get. It might be best to get something that won't need a lot of care when you're gone.

Except from what my older sister tells me.. a salt water aquarium can get expensive in a hurry.

Yea I was thinking they should get a Betta and see how that goes first...

$7.99 for the tank kit and $3.99 for the fish at Petsmart.
