Eh, Everyone is going to have an opinion on the matter one way or another.
Your alive thats all that matters...They make riding jeans with kevlar reinforced knees and ass and I would consider them to be "gear"...But I ride in jeans basically all the time...B/c Like you said...wearing a full or even two peice leather suit to go out can be tedious. But in retrospect it protects your skin and body incase you do go down...So the argument can be had for ages.
