It's not really fair to the bands made of christian members with christian themed music who actually have talent and could make it to mainstream. They can't really win.
I don't know anything about switchfoot but POD was never classified and a christian band. They are christians and their lyrical content includes christian subject matter but they were never put in the christain rock genre.

Because they didn't want to be classified as christian and therefore ruin their chances of being mainstream. That was my whole point. They sell POD albums at Christian bookstores because they are christian and they have christian themed music, but Christians bitch about how they 'sold out' by not labeling themselves as christian rock.

This one always makes me laugh. Every band hopes to "make it", and when they do, fans feel betrayed? I think it's just that they wanna feel like they "discovered" something private, that everyone else isn't hip enough to understand, and when they find out that they are not some fucking unique geniuses, and that other people like that shit too, they are heartbroken.

Too bad, so sad. "Making it" is not "selling out". The ultimate expression of an artist is to touch as many people with your art as possible.

Again; Bassplayer, if this really is your goal, consider not limiting your reach with labels.

Anyone see that episode of South Park where Kyle and Cartman had a race to see who could get a platinum album and Cartman went religious music route and got a mur album or something instead of a platinum? That was a good episode.

Anyone remember the name of the band?

When you change your musical style just to "make it" you are selling out. Metallica is a classic example. Their music really sucks now. I don't care that they are much more popular now. There are plenty of bands that make it that have never had to deviate from their original style. When you change your music.. it's a sell out.

Why is touching more people "selling out"?

There is no greater reward as an artist, than having an entire crowd of people singing your lyrics back at you. It means you connected with them.

Here's something I have learned about music, that I feel is of ultimate importance:

The only other thing that can transport a person to another time and place, and bring back memories of the past, what you were feeling, what you were doing, EXACTLY where you were is the sense of SMELL. One of the five basic senses.

That means that music hits you as hard as one of your innate senses. That's an awful powerful gift to be given; the ability to touch people THAT deeply. Being able to do that on a large scale is just a bigger gift, it's never "selling out".

I agree, the term selling out is to make people who try to be the unconformists feel better about themselves because their daddy didn't love them.

Then why change styles? Why not start that way from the beginning if your ultimate goal was to have fans sing your songs back to you? I'm not saying it's wrong to have a goal to be successful. That should be every bands goal. I'm just saying it's wrong to alienate your early fans.

Because good musicians evolve, musically.

Please note: This does not mean that I consider Metallica good music, nor anyone in the fucking band good musicians. I'm just sayin'...
