We pretty much let our kids decide which books they like.

Our son is almost 4 his likes are all over the place and our daughter is 7 and she's starting to get into mysteries. They both like books, but our daughter is a massive book hound with a huge library that seems to grow weekly. I couldn't begin to pick out one or two good ones because her tastes might be different than whoever you're buying yours for.

And now for a serious answer to your question.....

I like the classics. Anything by Shel Silverstein (something like that) or Where the Wild Things Are. I like things that have stood the test of time.

Goosebumps? That too advanced?

The Hardy Boys? Something with pics in it?

The "Walter The Farting Dog" series seems to be a favorite of my wife's students.
