Default Well, that was fun

Yesterday, at around 2:00pm, we had a water main blow out on the north side of campus. That cut water pressure to about 25% and, eventually, they cut it off completely to start repairs. That left our main admin building and the core of campus without water.

I came into work this morning, at around 6:00am, to find a couple of our campus facilities guys in my area who had noticed a minor water leak and started throwing plastic sheet over everything. Good on them because when the city turned the water on at around 6:30am I turned around at my desk, and saw a waterfall coming down through the drop ceiling.

So I frantically started moving computers and emptying out recycle bins, so that I had something to catch the water in. I saw one of the facilities guys on the door security camera and ducked into the hall, to get him to have the water turned off. By the time it was off, I had a half dozen paper recycle bins half full of water, with a 20'x20' area of floor covered in a growing puddle.

If I didn't always come into work an hour+ early, the whole place would have been flooded out.

If it wasn't for the leak while the water was off, I would say so. There was renovation on the floor above us, about 9 months back, and we had leaks from their drains and water feeds for weeks afterward. I think that the contractors who did the job just did shitty work and it let go.

If the building didn't have a PRV the pressure burst could rattle MOST joints loose.

The whole building and a couple of neighbouring buildings were shut off, and there was only one leak.

It actually looked pretty close to that, except in a sheet coming down between the ceiling tiles. Fortunately I got the water shut off pretty quickly, so I wasn't walking through a wading pool.
