Default Current tetanus shot?

How important is to have a current tetanus shot?
Can you just opt not to get one, until you actually need one?

My kid has to have one this year. NY is making all the kids his age (14) get them, but not just tetanus...he has to have pertussis too. He aint a happy camper.

My parents were talking about this the other day. My father said you don't have to get it until you need it, but it's better to be prepared.

Why?

Honestly I hate needles and haven't had one since I was a kid. Any time I go to the doctor's office, they tell me I am due. If it's okay to wait until you need it, I rather wait.

I guess I want to know the pro's and con's of getting vs not getting one until you need it.

10 years is how long the antibodies last for. You can wait untill you get a bad cut or need surgery to get one or can get it at your next check up. So olong as youre not allergic the only real con to getting one is your arm may be sore for a day or so.

In 6 plus years of emergency medicine I havent met anyone who liked needles in the first place its realy not that bad.
